The Real Food Café, Tyndrum

The Real Food Café is at the half-way point on the West Highland Way, in spectacular countryside which is walked each year by 50,000 hikers.

The business is run by brother and sister, Angus and Sarah, and because of its fairly remote location, relies heavily on tourists and walkers for its custom. The owners have the regular challenge of finding and retaining staff with the potential and attitude to deliver the level of service that the business has been built upon and which has helped it win several awards.

Good quality tasty food is served with genuine care and attention. The menu is varied and meals are prepared using mainly locally sourced produce which can sometimes present a challenge in that location. The Café is open long hours and has a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. In addition to offering good food, Sarah and Angus provide other thoughtful facilities for their customers such as outdoor dog hitches and water bowls, an anti-midge machine beside the outdoor seating and, to be installed during 2007, a bike-wash.

To quote a happy customer:

“After a great day out on the hills, I called in to the cafe by chance as the nearest restaurant was closed. It was a happy accident as it led to the discovery that food can still taste good, at a reasonable price and can be eaten in comfortable surroundings which are spotlessly clean. The proprietor insisted on preparing fresh chips as she was not prepared to serve up 'old' chips which were not at their best.”
